CANINE PERIODONTAL DISEASE
PICTURES AND DESCRIPTIONS OF THE 4 STAGES OF CANINE DENTAL DISEASE
Stage 1: Gingivitis
- Plaque and/or calculus on teeth
- Red and swollen gums with no tooth attachment loss
- Cleaning at this stage will save teeth
- REVERSIBLE CONDITION
Stage 2: Early Periodontal Disease
- Plaque and/or calculus on teeth
- Red and swollen gums
- Bad breath
- Loss of tooth attachment up to 25%
- POTENTIALLY REVERSIBLE
Stage3: Moderate Periodontal Disease
- Plaque and calculus on teeth
- Bleeding gums, sore mouth and bad breath
- Loss of tooth attachment between 25% and 50%
- PERMANENT DAMAGE WILL REQUIRE EXTRACTIONS
Stage4: Severe Periodontal Disease
- Significant calculus on teeth
- Severe gingivitis with bleeding gums, pus and bad breath
- Loss of tooth attachment greater than 50% causing loose teeth
- PERMANENT DAMAGE WILL REQUIRE EXTRACTIONS
